New Governor of South Australia

02 September 2014

I wish to formally extend my warmest congratulations to Mr Hieu Van Le on his appointment as Governor of South Australia.

I wish to formally extend my warmest congratulations to Mr Hieu Van Le on his appointment as Governor of South Australia.

This is an appointment that we can all be proud of and an occasion from which we can draw special inspiration.

Yesterday, I was priviledged to be at the swearing-in ceremony where Governor Hieu Van Le told the audience he was born and grew up in a war-torn country but arrived in Darwin by boat in 1977 filled with hope.  He stated that he arrived with, "an invisible suitcase filled with dreams" and that, "from here what had been desperation became hope and hope became the grounding of a dream.  It was the generosity of spirit and the spirit of a fair go of this society that helped us to unpack our invisible suitcase to realise our dreams.”

His story is both inspiring and grounding. We often hear of the concept of the great American Dream, but far less often do we mention the Australian Dream. I like to think that stories such as his epitomise what our country stands for and encompass all that is good about Australia. Mr Van Le's achievements are surely the attainment of the Australian Dream.

As a fellow migrant to South Australia, albeit in far more privileged circumstances, I share his passion and excitement about what South Australia has to offer. We are a great state and I know that Mr Le will be a great ambassador for us.

I wish Mr Le and his family all the best as he commences his new role and I look forward to working with him as I am sure our interests and passions will cross paths frequently in the future.
